Wines of the Week: Zesty Zinfandels

While it's still warm and sunny, hopefully everyone is cooking up an array of yummy BBQ dishes. Of course, with such robustly flavored dishes, one wants a bold wine, like Zinfandel. Here are a few that our tasting panel enjoyed for under $20.

Review:
A mix of berries, spice, and wild herbs comes together on the nose. A sip delivers flavors of blackberries, raspberries, and currants among accents of anise, herbs, and peppercorns. With polished tannins and perky flavors, it's a Zin to open when serving pulled pork.

Review:
An abundance of blackberries, black cherries, and raspberries jumps up from a glass, accented by hints of clove and pepper. The same concentrated dark fruit flavors come up front on the palate and move into suggestions of all-spice and pepper. Approachable tannins and solid layers for it's price point, this is a really good value Zin.

Review:
There are jammy aromas of blackberries, black cherries, and blueberries mingle with hints of spice and spring flowers on the nose. Plush tannins hold up a nice core of dark fruit on the palate, accented by suggestions of spice, oak, and violets. Approachable with typical "Lodi jam," it's a solid bargain for the price. Open with BBQ ribs..

Review:
Notes of plums and black cherries mingle among traces of clove and vanilla on the nose. Flavors of plum, cherry, and boysenberry come forth, followed by expressions of vanilla, clove, and dark chocolate. Plush tannins and a fruit forward character make this an easily sipped wine.
